When will we be paying for stuff with our smartphones?

Instead of fumbling with cash or pulling out a credit card, you whip out a smartphone. Inside the handset are chips that make nice with the store’s register, and a digital wallet app holds virtual replicas of your plastic debit, credit and loyalty cards. You tap the screen to choose which one you want to use to pay for your purchases, then confirm the amount. An instant later, the transaction is complete.

If the digital future pans out the way that leading banks, credit card issuers, wireless carriers and tech companies hope, scenarios like this could become common.

Mobile Advertising: Personalized Ads, Coupons Score With Users

The controversy about location-tracking on mobile devices, and the subsequent emphasis on location-based services in mobile advertising, may not be as important longer-term as previously thought. According to a new survey, it’s not location-relevant advertising that is most valued by mobile consumers; it’s mobile ads that are personalized to a users’ tastes.

Visa Unveils Incentives to Speed Shift to Mobile-Payment Systems

Visa Inc. unveiled plans to encourage U.S. retailers to shift to checkout systems that let consumers pay using their mobile phones, as the biggest payment network aims to jump ahead of rivals and curb credit-card fraud.

The company said it will let merchants that switch to credit-card readers supporting so-called EMV technology forego costly annual security certifications. Starting in 2015, it will also stop requiring banks to reimburse most merchants for some types of credit-card fraud, which can be prevented by using EMV systems, Visa said in a statement yesterday.

Ads on Tablets More Effective Than E-Readers

While casual observers often lump tablet-style computers and e-readers together because of their evident similarities, tablets would appear to be a more effective ad platform for magazine brands, according to a new study by GfK MRI’s Starch Advertising Research.

But the survey of an estimated 7,000 users of magazine apps, conducted from May-July of this year, may be too early to reflect real, long-term trends.

LinkedIn profit beats expectations of net loss

The Mountain View firm surprised Wall Street by reporting a profit in its first-ever earnings report as a public company.

LinkedIn reported second-quarter net income of $4.5 million, about 4 cents per share, a slight increase from the $4.3 million for the same period last year when it was still a privately held firm. Revenue grew to $121 million, a 120 percent increase compared the $54.9 million for the same quarter last year. And LinkedIn said membership has increased to 115.8 million worldwide, a 61 percent increase from June 2010.

Randi Zuckerburg leaves Facebook to start new social media firm

Randi Zuckerberg, who is director of marketing at Facebook and also the sister of CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg — is leaving the company after six years to start a new media firm to help companies become more social.

The company Randi Zuckerberg is creating is apparently called RtoZ Media, which is obviously a play on her name. The move is likely to be much noticed, since Randi Zuckberberg has been at Facebook since its early days and has also been a high-profile and charismatic personality both inside the social networking company and in Silicon Valley.

Expected: Child: Facebook welcomes fetuses to social media

Facebook has just made it easier for expectant parents to announce their burgeoning bellies via their social network. To introduce your growing gametes via Facebook, simply click on "Edit my profile," then "Friends and Family." Alongside the standard choices to identify your kin, like Mom, Dad or Grandma, you’ll now find "Expected: Child.”

The new category may be yet more proof of our cultural penchant for oversharing, but it’s hardly groundbreaking. For years, women have been obsessing over how to break the news of their expanding waistlines creatively via Facebook; “Expected: child” is simply recognition that the observant folks at Facebook have noticed users doing this.

Klout to measure Foursquare, YouTube influencers

Social analytics company Klout, which measures user influence across social sites, is now including location-based site Foursquare and video-sharing site YouTube in its influencer calculations.

Klout originally measured only the influence of Twitter users. With the additions, Klout now covers five major social sites, including Facebook and LinkedIn, offering marketers an additional metric to help engage with their most influential customers and prospects. The “Klout Score” given to social users ranges from 1 to 100, measuring such variables as the reach of the user’s posts, and how others react to and engage with those posts.

Lady Gaga, Kanye West invest in Turntable.fm

Lady Gaga and Kanye West are both investing in New York-based startup Turntable.fm. They’ll reportedly be contributing to a $7.5 million financing round that’s being led by Union Square Ventures, which recently gave Turntable a $37.5 million valuation.

The music-based social network allows members to create avatars that perform as DJs, spinning tunes from the user’s computer songs for other users. The site has nearly every song imaginable (somehow without label deals, which has led to questions of its legality), and users can upload music if it’s not already there. Turntable is also planning an iPhone app that would allow multiple people at a party to request songs and wirelessly upload them to a playlist.

The pros and cons of augmented reality
I know, I know. Augmented reality (or "AR," is it?) is the next "it" when it comes to marketing. Big time players like BMW, Ben & Jerry’s Ray-Ban, and eBay — and even those without a "B" in their name, such as Audi — are jumping on the augmented reality bandwagon.

And rightly so. Augmented reality is truly amazing and offers a heretofore unimaginable opportunity for marketers to allow consumers the chance to "try on" and "test drive" their products — all from the comforts of their PC or smartphone, and even their car windshields. Yes, I know it’s technically been around since the ’90s, but nothing to this extent.
